Things To Do In And Around The City During Summer

By Stephen Duff

As we’re all adjusting to the holidays, hopefully we’re all starting to think about things to do and see around the city.

Here are a few of my favourites that are practically free. You can even take a packed lunch with you on the day.

  • Enjoy the Fitzroy or Botanical Gardens: The gardens are divine during summer. Take a packed lunch, plonk yourself wherever you wish and watch the world go by. Both gardens are only a few tram stops out of the city.
  • Shrine of Remembrance: Located just a short 10-15min tram ride out of the city, heading toward St Kilda. An inspiring and reflective experience with nice views of the surrounding area.
  • National Art Gallery: Just a short walk from Flinders St Station, or one stop on the tram. Another wonderful, free experience that can potentially take up a few hours of your day. There are several levels to explore and, if you go on a Sunday, it can be combined with the local market.
  • Queen Victoria Market: It speaks for itself, but you may want to take some coin for this one as it’s extremely easy to grab a few bargains! They also have a wonderful night markets mid-week. Don’t forget, travel is free within the CBD and, if you go on a weekend, travel is free with a Myki concession card in metropolitan Melbourne.

Of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, a trip down the Mornington Peninsula is definitely a day filler. Hope this helps inspire some of you to get out and about in Melbourne this summer.

Keep safe, until next year…
