Meet the Team: Xander

By Kevin Neild

It’s time for another edition of our Meet the Team series! This time, we’re excited to introduce you to Xander. While many of you may already know Xander, we’re sure you’ll still learn something new about him as he sat down with us for a chat about a range of topics. So, get ready to get to know Xander a little bit better and learn more about the person behind the role!

When did you first become involved with Out Doors Inc and how did it come about?

I first became involved with Out Doors in 2021. Somehow, my mum had actually come across the job advertisement and sent it through to me. “This looks perfect for you,” I believe her words were at the time. She was right and I applied straight away. Very soon, I was employed as a sessional staff member and began staffing lots of trips! I can honestly say, I felt at home at Out Doors almost immediately.

What is your role now with Out Doors?

My current role with Outdoors Inc is as a Program Leader. Since the beginning of 2023, I have been busy planning and leading my own trips. From Ballarat, the Dandenongs, Grampians, and Wilsons Prom, my calendar is looking very exciting.

What is your favourite thing to do at Out Doors?

I am a climber. I am a keen hiker. I also love paddling in canoes and kayaks. By far my favourite thing to do at Out Doors is connect with new people and share in the challenges and triumphs in any of these outdoor activities.

Where is your favourite place to visit with Out Doors?

A very difficult question. I would have to say the high country: Mt Buffalo, Mt Bogong, and Dinner Plain. It is a truly magical place all year round. A close second would have to be the Murray River.

Have you always enjoyed being in nature, where did your love of nature and the great Out Doors come from?

I grew up in the country: in sub-tropical Northern NSW and I have always been an outdoors-minded person. Whether it was playing sports outdoors or going on camping trips with my family, I have never been inclined to stay indoors for long periods

What is your favourite activity or thing to do in the outdoors?

Multi-day hiking and rock climbing are my favourite. A combination of the two is ideal. I can often be found scrambling up difficult hikes around Victoria. I believe big challenges have big rewards!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would you live?

I am quite happy living in beautiful Victoria. However, my love of mountains could absolutely see me living in Nepal or Canada in my life!

What do you do when you’re having your own mental health challenges?

For my own mental health, I need to move my body and I need quiet time. Getting outdoors and into nature ticks a lot of those boxes for me and it is why I feel so passionate about the work that Outdoors Inc does. I often take myself for long walks, read my books or go climbing.

What is your favourite movie?

So many. If I must choose it’s the Lord of the Rings Trilogy!
