5 must know fishing tips for success with Kieren
Fishing has always been a part of who I am. Growing up on the shores of Lake Hume in regional Victoria, I was fortunate enough to have a fishing rod in my hand before I even knew what it was. Fishing quickly became something I loved and still enjoy to this day as I am now apart of Out Doors inc.
For me, fishing is about more than just catching fish, it’s one of the most adrenalinen filled activities out there. I know that sounds bizarre, but it’s true. There’s an undeniable thrill in the possibility of catching something. The build-up of excitement, the anticipation of a strike, it keeps me casting again and again. Every second could bring that electrifying tug on the line, and that keeps me hooked.
Beyond the rush, fishing takes me to some of the most beautiful waterways across Australia. Whether I’m chasing the thrill of the catch or exploring wild, untouched rivers, I love every part of the experience. While I enjoy all types of fishing, my true passion lies in hunting for mountain trout, particularly in remote river systems.
My favourite spot? The Victorian high country, especially the Mitta Mitta River. It’s an incredible place clear waters, wild landscapes, and plenty of fish waiting to be caught.
But enough about me let’s talk about you and how you can land more fish!
Here are my top five tips for fishing success:
1. There’s No Substitute for Time on the Water
It’s simple—the more time you spend with your bait or lure in the water, the more likely you are to catch something. Fishing requires patience, and putting in the hours pays off. Even if the fish aren’t biting right away, persistence can lead to that golden moment.
2. Find the Right Spot
Location is key. If you can find a spot that hasn’t been overfished, your chances of catching something increase significantly. Look for areas with good marine environments—places with lots of natural food for fish. Undiscovered fishing spots can be the secret to success.
3. Do Your Research
Knowing the waterway and what fish are likely to be there is essential. Talk to locals or stop by a fishing shop for advice. You can also find plenty of online resources that offer tips on the best bait or lures to use and the ideal times or tides to fish. Preparation can make a huge difference.
4. Set Your Alarm Early
Fish are most active at dawn and dusk. If you’re serious about catching something, plan to be out there early in the morning or in the late afternoon. The best bites often happen when the sun is low, and you’ll have the water mostly to yourself.
5. Keep Trying
Not every day will be a success, and that’s okay. Fishing is as much about the experience as the catch. Spending time by the water, taking in the surroundings, and enjoying the moment makes every trip worth it. And when you keep at it, eventually you’ll have those days where everything clicks, and every cast feels like magic.
