The weather gods finally smiled on us as we enjoyed a sunny blue-sky day at Point Cooke Coastal Park & Marine Sanctuary. The park is a little well-kept secret, nestled behind the sprawling suburbs of Point Cooke; it contains wetlands, grasslands, pine forests, a historic homestead, and borders onto the shores of Port Philip Bay. ![]()

The western shore of Port Philip Bay is also known as one of the top bird-watching sites in the world, as it sits along the migratory path for seasonal birds between the northern and southern hemisphere. With that in mind, and armed with a guidebook and binoculars, we spent the day exploring the park and spotting birdlife. Some of the notable birds spotted were willy wagtails, fairy wrens, and Australian pied cormorant. On a few occasions we also spotted some kites gliding in the winds above the bay. ![]()

Due to the heavy rains this season, some walking tracks were flooded and turned into large ponds – which meant we had to create our own adventure by bush-bashing through bracken and shrubs. The wind was certainly helpful in blowing away the mozzies that were out in full strength! By the end we certainly earned our generous lunch spread! It was great to see many first-time participants on this trip, building new connections and sharing stories. It was a wonderful warm day as we visited the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne recently, where we discovered a variety of gardens including a cactus garden from South America that is over 90 years old, a board walk through a tropical rainforest, peaceful ponds with lily pads and a variety of flower gardens in splendid display on a lovely spring day. In addition to all the new gardens to discover, best of all were the great conversations and company we had along the way.![]()
