Learn how to provide mental health first aid to friends, family members, co-workers and other adults in your community.
Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance.
Physical first aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however, most do not cover mental health problems.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches participants how to assist people who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
The Blended Mental Health First Aid Community Course will teach you how to provide initial support to other adults aged 18-65 who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan.
There are two components to this course:
- Component 1 (before the course) – A self-paced eLearning component (takes 5-7 hours to complete)
- Component 2 (April 27 and 28) – Two instructor-led sessions using video conferencing. Each session is approx. 3 hours.
The training is based on guidelines developed together by people with lived experience of mental health problems and health professionals working in the field.
Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, you’ll learn how to provide mental health first aid for a range of mental health problems (depression, anxiety problems, psychosis, substance use) and mental health crises (suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drug use, and aggressive behaviours).
