Sven’s Guide to What’s on in Melbourne for Summer
By Sven
Summer has arrived, and there are plenty of exciting things to do in and around Melbourne during the holidays! Before we dive in, I want to acknowledge Calum and Pascoe from the amazing behind-the-scenes editorial team at Out Doors Inc. Without their assistance, knowledge, and support, these newsletters simply wouldn’t be possible. Big thanks to them for guiding us through all the great newsletter editions this year!
Now, on to some of my personal favourite things to do around Melbourne over Summer:
- Melbourne Museum
- The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in the city
- The Shrine of Remembrance
- Fitzroy Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens, both perfect for a relaxing day out. The Botanic Gardens even host free movies and events throughout the holiday period!
For those looking for a bit more excitement, check out:
- SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium
- Luna Park
- Scienceworks (Museums Victoria), a hidden gem located in Spotswood.
Scienceworks is an interactive experience that also features a fantastic planetarium. The planetarium offers shows lasting 30–45 minutes, including a live presentation of the current night sky and major astronomical objects visible at the time. These shows run at night and change regularly. Tickets are just $15, and I recommend setting aside at least half a day to fully enjoy the experience.
I had the chance to get involved too, taking a few pictures and videos while cheering on the participants. It was heartwarming to see so many smiles as people made their way down, conquering fears and gaining confidence with each step.
Lunch was a well-deserved break, with salad rolls and wraps shared around as we swapped stories and got to know each other better. The sense of camaraderie was amazing, and the energy in the air was infectious. After lunch, we went for another round of abseiling, each time feeling a little braver, a little more confident.

The day wasn’t just about the adrenaline rush. Watching everyone open up, make new friends, and share their experiences was incredibly fulfilling. It’s a reminder that stepping outside your comfort zone can help you connect with others and improve your mental health.
As we packed up and headed back to Out Doors HQ, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience and the connections made. I’m already looking forward to the next adventure! Make sure to scan the QR code to watch the YouTube video I put together from the day!
For more information about Scienceworks, you can call them directly at 13 11 02 or visit their website – https://museumsvictoria.com.au/scienceworks/. Another great idea is to take a V/Line country trip. You can travel as far as you like with affordable Myki charges, and bringing your own packed lunch and snacks can help keep costs down while you enjoy the journey.
That’s it from me for this edition—and for 2024. I sincerely wish you all the best over the holidays and look forward to sharing more articles with you in 2025. Take care, my friends, and until next time…
