Melon Mania! John’s Guide to Perfect Melons
John Gannon
Melons
There are many types of melons, including rockmelon, watermelon, and honeydew. They come in a range of colours, and all belong to the Cucurbitaceae family, known for their sweet, edible fruit. Originating from Africa, Iran, and India, melons are packed with antioxidants that help remove harmful compounds from the body. Each variety offers its own unique antioxidants, and they’re also very hydrating due to their high water content, supporting both immune and skin health. Melons have been cultivated since ancient times, dating back 4,000 years in Egypt.
How to grow
The best time to grow melons from seed is in early spring, but now is the perfect time to plant melon seedlings. The best way to get started is by transplanting seedlings from a nursery or Bunnings. Plant them in a 2 cm layer of compost or in a pot with a minimum 30 cm diameter filled with compost (make sure the pot has drainage holes). Melons thrive in a long, hot season and can’t tolerate frost. Keep the soil moist until fruiting. When ripe, melons should feel heavy and produce a deep, drum-like sound when tapped.
How to Cook/Eat
Melons are most commonly eaten fresh, but they’re also great in salads, mocktails, and even with ice cream.
