In my previous article in the Autumn Edition of Out Doors Ink, I mentioned a walking group. This article goes into more detail about this group and how you can go about creating your own. The idea came about because as a group we were interested in expanding our contacts and were all interested in walking and exploring different areas around greater Melbourne that are accessible by public transport.
The purpose was to spend time with friends made through Out Doors, explore new areas, and share good times together. It started as an offshoot of the BBQ group as a casual idea that has become a popular event that we all look forward to.
Our walk for May was from Sandringham Station to Brighton Beach after initially meeting under the clocks at Flinders Street Station. We then got on a train to Sandringham and grabbed a quick breakfast together. Our walks are staggered by quick meals, coffee or other drinks and ice cream and of course the chats that go on with individuals and groups. Either bring your own food or buy it as we go.
We are all participants of the BBQs, get on well together and all enjoy new things and may even venture into going to live shows down the track.
Here are a few tips if anyone reading this is interested in starting a similar own group. To start off, you always need someone to organise the event and message people. The person needs to be familiar with Melbourne’s public transport linkages and either comfortable researching places to go or be aware of different locations and sites of interest to visit.
The whole idea of the article and the one on BBQs is to encourage other like-minded people or groups to get engaged in setting up their own activities whatever they are, to generate greater community engagement. You are also welcome to consider joining us, but it needs to be understood we like to get to know you before issuing an invitation.
